Re: Vodafone V P A Compact III v1605 (HTC Hermes) Review
Well I've had the v1605 from Vodafone now a few days and heres my findings if anyone is thinking about getting one. I've done a fair bit of my own research online before buying.
1. Build Quality - very good indeed. I may have to lug this phone overseas and I would have no problems taking it. How it would hold up if really whacked, I don't know as I am still carrying it around like a newborn at the moment.
2. Audio Quality - SUPERB. I've read that HTC took notice of previous models having poor audio quality, and I can tell you that this is a cracking player for music and video. I loaded up a music vid and both visually and audio-wise it was all good.
3. Supplied Headphones - No problems here. They don't look anything special but the sound quality is great. Also bear in mind that you can replace these for a bluetooth headphone/headset if you wish.
4. WIFI - mmmm....I read (and confirmed) that the wifi on this baby is not that sensitive. My old Netgear WGT624V3 was inaccessiable downstairs in the front room. I was getting annoyed with the Netgear on other fronts (dropping connection despite firmware flash/general tweaking), so opted for a Belkin G MIMO. MY GOD that was worth its weight in gold, and at 54 pounds sterling a steal also. With MIMO, I am getting 2-3 bars on the v1605. So if you are worried about sensitivity, check your wifi. All that the v1605 did is confirm my Netgear was pants.
5. Speed - at 400Megs its a good cpu but you will still get the odd stutter if you push it, no surprises. I went to town on the v1605, thrashing it with multiple apps and audio/video etc. It still holds up, compared to my IPAQ, so no worries. Just don't compare it to a desktop or a laptop, and you'll be fine!
6. Connectivity - the lack of audio jack for headphones almost put me off, as I like my all-in-one to have headphone capability. BUT, now I have it, the USB-supplied fones rock, so don't panic.
7. Price - I was told in the shop that it would cost in the region of 150-250 to upgrade. I phoned up Vodafone and they were brilliant, offering me a deal for 100 pounds plus reduced monthly installments. YOU CANNOT GO WRONG! Remember that this is a fully fledged PDA, drop the SIM card out and you have a very powerful PDA in your hand, worth 500 quid sim-free.
OVERALL - I really like it, its going to take more getting used to as its not as sleek as my previous mobile. But my mobile didnt have QWERTY keyboard, audio capabilities, wifi, bluetooth etc etc etc. When it comes to convergence, this baby rocks.
Buy, and bye!
