Re: iGO MyWay 2006 Satellite Navigation: Review

I have- and they have now replied that there are no plans to issue anything other than the 2GB needed for the I-go software due to incompatibilty of larger cards with many devices.

I've also asked if some means may be found to transfer a license to a larger card, or they will definitely lose sales, but no reply.

Subject: iGo and Memory Card

Dear Sirs

I have just been reading the review of iGo My Way on 4winmobile with much interest.

I have been a long term TOMTOM user and currently using TOMTOM Navigator 5 – I have recently been considering my options for future upgrades. Having read through the above review my first reaction was WOW – that is a really nice piece of software – gotta have it!! However my second reaction on reading about the licensing model you use was – dead in the water –no dice. I have a Touch Dual – capable of using large MicroSD disk – and I currently have an 8GB card fitted – on which I have the whole of western Europe for TOMTOM, music, photo album and videos which I use to entertain myself daily during the 3 hours it takes me to train to and from work.

With the advent of SDHC and an increasing number of WM devices capable of using them, I believe it is essential that iGo make their products as widely available and user friendly as possible if they want to compete with the market leaders, TOMTOM – I accept that some people may not use a memory card, but there are a huge number who do, and it is going to be very inconvenient (at the very least) if we have to swap cards in order to use iGO – microSD cards aren’t the easiest to handle after all.

I understand that you intend to release a MicroSD card version soon. The cost of larger size MicroSD cards is fairly low – my 8GB card cost just £33. If you were to market the basic 2GB card with iGo loaded and also give an option to purchase iGo on a larger card – say 4 or 8GB at an additional cost, this would at least enable you to reach a wider market. Alternatively consider changing your licensing model to an online activation like so many other software houses, including TOMTOM.

Until one of the above happens, I am afraid I am one of many who will not be willing to change over. Shame really – as you product looks really great. Aside from the installation issues noted in the review, there is one major flaw – and for many – it’s the killer. Sorry!

Just wonder whether I'll get a positive reply - from what I have seen so far here - I'm not holding my breath!

Nice one Griph!

I'm still awaiting a reply on the licensing model question after they said they won't consider using a larger card.

Response from iGo received today as follows:

"Tanks very much for your observations and ideas we will consider them during developing/relasing the iGO My way software.£

Well at least it wasn't a no!

I've also pointed DSL at this thread; as retailers they have little say in policy decisions, but it is possible the UK importer may have some influence.

This topic does seem to have become a discussion of a 'yet to be released' program; remember we are not talking about the subject of the review itself!
