That's true- I've been caught by a few zipped downloads with auto-extract that go off and overwrite an existing setup.exe for which I've always lost the original link

Re: Microsoft Security Essentials Beta

I have been using this ever since getting rid of the Beta Version of Panda 2009 - MSEB works better for me in the background and is a compliment to windows 7, its even managed to stop some adware

Re: Microsoft Security Essentials Beta

The only negative for me is that it only auto-updates the definition files if you have Windows Update set to automatically install updates.

If Windows Update is set to prompt for updates to install, MSSE has to be manually updated.

I never save it as setup.exe, I always rename the file to something relevant....

Re: Microsoft Security Essentials Beta

HeHe- stable doors etc! I do try and save stuff with meaningful names, but one or two slip through the net!

In my view, its down to lazy programming- installers really should give the exe installer a meaningful (or at least unique!) name. Previously it didn't matter as most stuff was installed from CD's, but the download era has introduced some other variables!

Re: Microsoft Security Essentials Beta

It tends to depend on the app you use to build the installer. Visual Studio insists on strong names so my .exe gets a helpful name more as a consequence of that than any particular foresight on my part . Other builders I've seen are far less flexible and/or helpful.

Far more annoying are Intranets where every page is stored in it's own folder and then called either index.htm. Grrrrrrrrr. Not that I'm currently dealing with such an Intranet you understand. Just a random annoyance plucked from thin air
