It would get installed AFTER the ROM update. Once the device starts after the upgrade you will have to do the usual WM things such as screen alignment etc. When you get the WM message to 'tap the screen to begin using your device', the O2 customisations should then start so don't switch off or reset the device if you want them installed.....

Hi guys, and thanks for the welcome.
Just to confirm my understanding, the contents of the ROM (in this case the replaced WM6) are seperate from the o2 custimisations?
My brother in law upgraded his o2 orbit to WM6 but couldnt see the custimisations on his phone, then again he didnt have them to start with in WM5
The onl.y other consideration is if the o2 custimisation is compatiable with WM6.

Re: O2 XDA Orbit WM6 Upgrade FAQ
Graham,
I don't have the O2 ROM on at the moment (I am using a derivative). If you can wait for a few days, I might be able to re-flash to the released O2 ROM and check on the customisations for you unless, of course, someone who still has it on their device can confirm categorically.
The way the ROMs are built and installed goes a little like this....
Vanilla ROM comes from Microsoft and the operators do some tweaking and testing to make sure its all OK. Sometimes they add in some functionality. This is the CORE OS.
Operators then usually do some 'local' customisations - network settings and sometimes some apps that are considered non-core - such as the O2 today plugin etc. These go into an 'Extended ROM' which is a small area hidden on the device. Once the Core OS has installed and the basic WM set up has taken place the Extended ROM customisations run and install the apps as necessary.
You can 'unlock' the Extended ROM and see the files in there and on some devices use the space as extra storage but its not worth it on the Orbit as its only 2MB in size whereas the Exec has 10MB which can come in handy as it has less memory onboard than the Orbit.....

Re: O2 XDA Orbit WM6 Upgrade FAQ
Hi Tonybro,
Thans for claryifiying that for me with regards to extended ROM. Its really interesting stuff when you scratch beyone the surface and begin to understand how these things work.
I will take you up on the offer to reflash your ROM if your able (if not, dont worry) prior to doing mine as im guessing lashing ROM invalidates warrenty or certainly would make the insurance I have with O2 null and void if I 'broke' it duing an upgrade.
You have me intregued with this 'deriviative' you re using....what flavour does this come in? Are there many types of derivatives that offer different things?
Kind Regards
Graham

The more you scratch the more you realise how little you know - and that's the beginnings to understanding knowledge!

I can do that for you (takes about an hour all in) as I have backups and can re-flash back in no time....
I'll post up a screenshot for you as the ROM would install with all customisations....

Head over to XDA-Developers if you relly want to get your fingernails dirty! Look in their forums for the Artemis (Orbit is part of the family!) and look under the Upgrading to WM6 section.... Will scare you!!!
The ROM I am running is from there and is based on the O2 ROM you will flash but has had bits stripped out and others added in but all will become clearer if you visit XDA-Devs....

/slaps head/
Graham,
The first screenshot in the FAQ has the WM6 ROM screen with the customisations and if you look in the taskbar at the bottom right, the O2 app is running so must get installed.... I assume this is the app you mention?
See below....

Oooh- another one gets the upgrading bug!!
Download the O2 ROM anyway- then if you have any device problems you can reflash the O2 one before sending for warranty repair.

Re: O2 XDA Orbit WM6 Upgrade FAQ
Hi,
have a uk spec o2 orbit running an o2 ireland sim card, as far as i know the orbit was unlocked(it was a present), now the question considering upgrading to wm6, using the file here, will it lock my phone to o2uk requiring it to be unlocked for o2 ireland?,or is it just a software upgrade and nothing to do with the phone part itself?? the phone has a customisation menu with settings for uk and irl o2 just to confuse matters.
regards,
Chris.

Re: O2 XDA Orbit WM6 Upgrade FAQ
Hi chris500ie,
The UK spec Orbit from O2 is unlocked so any IM should work. The ROM upgrade naturally updates the entire device but I think it still comes with the O2 config applet. If you are not sure or want to make a manual note of the SMS/MMS/Web/Wap/Voicemail settings, its fairly easy to get access to them on the device and most are probably in our Settings FAQ anyway...
The upgrade is worth it in terms of making the device more coherent and 'joined up' - its a strange thing to say but the WM6 upgrade itself doesn't bring any massive changes it just makes things more complete and rounded...

Well did the upgrade as per the instruction here and it all went without a hitch, everything works 100% and after installing it gave the option of installing the o2 customisations or skipping them altogether.
First impressions are as tonybro says, not a big change as to layout/function but everything just feels better and more together, well worth the 10 mins praying that all would be ok.
Thank you for the help and advice i received on this forum, Merry Christmas to all
Chris.
