WM5 Smartphone storage memory reclamation.

These are tips I've picked up along the way from various sites including XDA Devs, and the Imate site. They relate to the small memory available on the Imate SP5m. These hacks basically move mail and IE files to the SD card. Oh, and everything here is free too.

Firstly you'll need to install and use a registry editor. Mobile registry editor is great, and allows you to make the changes from the PC. Unfortunately in order to unlock your phone to use Mobile registry editor you'll need to unlock your phone.

SmartPhone Registry Editor (Edit registry directly from the phone)

Download RegeditSTG.zip here.

Next, use RegeditSTG directly on the phone and change the following keys to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies\0000 1001 = 1
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Security\Policies\Policies\0000 1005 = 40

Now you can download and use Mobile Registry Editor here.

No with a Mobile Registry Editor browse:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Exp lorer\Shell Folders

And change the following keys to as shown:

\Storage Card\Pocket IE\Temporary Internet Files
\Storage Card\Pocket IE\Cookies
\Storage Card\Pocket IE\History

This will ensure all your IE cache goes on your storage card.

Finally,

Create the following folders on your Storage Card

'\Storage Card\Inbox'
'\Storage Card\Inbox\Attachments'

Next, create the following registry entries:-

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\MAPI

AttachPath="\Storage Card\Inbox\Attachments"
PropertyPath="\Storage Card\Inbox"

This not only puts email attachments onto your storage card but puts all the *.mpb files which make up items in your Inbox onto the storage card too.

Enjoy.

Yeah, you'll need it too. The 64MB memory goes nowhere.

great post, but it didnt work for me. i have a few questions:
1. where do I save regeditSTG on my sp5m?
2. where do I save mobile registry editor on my sp5m?
3. when I create entries in the registry (the last step you suggested) am I simply creating a new string?
4. Do I have to restart the sp5m for the transfer of existing messages to storage card?

thanks

Re: WM5 Smartphone storage memory reclamation.

Hmmm... it's been a while, but from memory, you'll need to copy the regeditSTG.exe to your device, either via SD or AS, then run it. Once you've made the changes you should be able to run mobile registry editor from your PC when your device is connected over AS. Yes, you do create a new string, and yes I think you do need a soft reset for it to take.

Hope that helps.

ok, I'll give it a shot again. Do I have to copy regeditSTG into a specific folder in the phone. I put it in application data!?

Re: WM5 Smartphone storage memory reclamation.

You should be able to run it from anywhere. I think I left it on the SD card.

I am having some problems with following your tips for moving the email to the storage Card. The issue is that after a reboot the storage card get renamed to Storage Card2 and then there's a new folder that is created called Storage Card. I've reset the phone and everything. I figured out it's the setting in the registry. See what I think is happening is that the message in the Today page.. That thing in the front of the screen that tells you about mail that you have and stuff runs before windows can mount the memory card... That's why a new folder gets created that's empty and then the real memory card shows up.. It doesn't seem to make outlook break... but it breaks every other program installed onto the memory card...

Re: WM5 Smartphone storage memory reclamation.

Interesting. You could well be right, some devices take an age to mount the card. What device are you using?
