Re: Is the iPhone a threat to WM devices?
I'm just looking to see if I can pick up a cheap iPhone from somewhere so see what they look like - all my wangling has failed to get a new (or old) one from O2 as it is handled by a different department than I usually talk to!

Walk into any music store and pick up an iPod touch. They are basically the same except the iPhone is several mm thicker.

Re: Is the iPhone a threat to WM devices?
I voted NO - enterprise yada yada yada...
there isn't a serious executive, salesperson, i.t. professional whatever in business that would truly trade in the flexibility of the average WM device over the look/feel factor of the iPhone... As already mentioned, form and function is incredibly important in the business community, it just has to work and work well... Now, on the other hand (consumer market), the iPhone will certainly keep MS and HTC on their respective toes... But for the life of me, I wouldn't trade my TyTN for a souped up iPod with voice capabilities and very little of what else I need for day to day work... Oh, did I mention that I use my iPod maybe once a month... and that has to be a conscious effort...
post #999 - one more to go... and no, it will not be a pure quality post either...

Re: Is the iPhone a threat to WM devices?
Ive gone over to Iphone completely....Now have Iphone 3g.... Ive had loads of WM device in my time and non have "just worked" out of the box.
The thing I like about them is that they do just work, yeah i miss the copy/paste but still love the device.
WM 0/S doesnt have the usability of the Iphone.
As for Web browsing for me there is no contest its Iphone every time, again just works.....no problems and readable.

Yes, don't dissapear Jim, if you have time and don't mind, it'd be great to see a comparative post from you on what you feel the benefits of the iPhone are over Windows Mobile. I think you're perfectly placed being a long time WM user.

I'm with you Jim and voted yes as I've just sold my last Windows PDA (and I've been using them since the first Compaq Ipaq)
The iPhone has even led me to go all Mac now - it's cliche I know but everything just works - my iMac and Mac Air have simply not crashed since I've owned them and since version 2 of iPhone software came out I now get Exchange and am happily viewing work email including excel, word and powerpoint etc.. Also Mobile Me which is basically pitched as Exchange for home users.
Don't get me wrong - there is still so MUCH for Apple to do yet to improve as the platform is still in it's infancy by comparison but improvements are coming. And since the release of the App store in iTunes there are now over 500 applications with familiar names like Web IS and Pocket Informant coming soon. http://pocketinformant.com/?p_id=pocketinformant_iphone. I'm even using my iPhone as a Remote for my Apple TV and itunes with a swish screen that works seemlessly over my WIFI network so no line of site issues or IR codes to program.
(Jim check out the free Phone Saber app - if you fancy being a iPhone Jedi!) And the games (crash Bandicoot with motion sensor etc...) are on par with a PSP/DS level
I'm keeping an eye on WM (and this brilliant site!) to see what they come up with to see if MS can tempt me back. Hope you don't mind me popping back either although having been so loyal to MS WM and this site for so many years - I do feel like I'm having a sordid affair and whilst feeling guilty it's also fun

Re: Is the iPhone a threat to WM devices?
The thing is I am a heavy PDA user, but really a power user, if you know what I mean.
For me I don’t need VPN from a PDA or any of the really technical stuff. I don’t use a slingbox.
What I use my PDA for is Diary and Contacts and as er Phone, surf when I have 5 minutes to spare or watch a film when im on a train (once or twice a month)
Im probably one of the few people who thinks the camera on an Iphone is ok.
I know that you can do all these things with WM but it just doesn’t do it as well.
I have been over the last few months drifting away from WM having gone from T-Mobile MDA Vario III through to Nokia 95, Nokia E90, then to Iphone….

Re: Is the iPhone a threat to WM devices?
I voted "Maybe - Depends on what MS do with the next WM OS".
I'm seriously considered allowing a couple onto our exchange server as a trial, whilst I haven't looked at the security implementation since the original announcement I am fairly sure that Apple will continue to add features and refine any existing ones.
However, I'm half in the so what camp "No - it lacks advanced features and is eye candy only". A lot of the clamour from people for the iPhone at work are because they don't understand the potential of the device in their pocket. It may well force me to do some development work with the WM devices next year but I don't see anything on the iPhone from an enterprise point of view that I can't already do with the WM devices in the business already.
