New Zest owner here, few questions and remarks

Hi all

Just upgraded to an Xda Zest a few days back. I really like it, but have a few things about it that I need to ask:

1) For the life of me, I cannot get it to vibrate when I receive a new text or MMS despite the vibrate option being ticked under both in the notifications section of the sounds and notifications control panel.

2) The battery, despite running flat and charging up 2 or 3 times still doesn't hold much charge. I know I'm fiddling with it lots because it's new, but I'm lucky if it last from morning til evening and that's with only 15 mins calls or so.

Would this 2200mAh work instead?

If not, does anyone have any recommendations?

3) I find that when browsing the net either through Wi-fi or GPRS, that sometimes after 10 minutes or so it just loses connection to the web (despite the actual wi-fi/GPRS connection still showing as connected) and I have to soft reset it to re-connect.

Other than that, I do really like it so far

Hi thegfb and welcome to 4WM

Sorry to read you are having many teething problems with the Zest.

The battery life sounds shocking, the wifi connection shouldn't drop out, and it should vibrate when the setting is made!

I would go for a hard reset rather than a soft reset to be honest, as it seems the drivers in the OS haven't kicked in properly, let us know if that helps and we will try and advise further if needed.

Perhaps you will enjoy the Zest even more if the hard reset works for you!

Can't really help with 1, but does it vibrate otherwise (like when it starts up after a soft reset)? I'm not 100% certain, but it may be that like my old XDA, it either vibrates or gives a sound alert. It won't do both at the same time.

Battery life is not that hot. As you are still messing about with it the life will be even worse. Just make sure that you go into the task manager and shut down anything that you have finished with. Also turn off Wifi, Bluetooth etc.

I would also thoroughly recommend that you download and install the latest firmware update as that will definitely improve things (and maybe sort the other issues). If you speak to O2, they will almost certainly advise updating before considering anything else.

Good luck!

Re: New Zest owner here, few questions and remarks

Hi, thanks for the comments.

I fixed the vibration issue, it seems you need to tick another box in the general sounds and notifications control panel.

If anything, the battery life is getting worse I fully charged it today, left it idle for half an hour (With nothing running in task manager, all bluetooth/wi-fi off etc) and the battery had gone down to 86% already

Does anyone know if my link to the replacement battery is suitable, or any other replacements with bigger capacity that are compatible with the Zest?

I will investigate a firmware upgrade too thanks

My battery was running almost completely down over night with everything switched off. I honestly thought the battery was snookered but the firmware update sorted it.

Re: New Zest owner here, few questions and remarks

Hi, well the firmware update applied itself successfully.

The bad news is that I don't think it has made any difference to battery life. It was fully charged up at 10pm last night. I unplugged it and just left it switched on, with all Wi-fi/GPRS turned off etc. At 9am this morning it was down to 34% battery .

If the battery is faulty, I really don't want to have to send the whole unit back to O2 and suffer the inconvenience which is why I'd just as well buy a completely new, better battery if one does exist??

Thanks for your help so far guys

I would personally change the device, I am pretty sure that O2 will swap out devices on your doorstep when the new version is delivered if you ask.

Re: New Zest owner here, few questions and remarks

I've just come back from a Stag weekend whereby I had my Zest fully charged at 7am Saturday morning. I've made 20minutes calls, recieved 20 emails (Exchange Active Sync running in full throughout) and used about 15 minutes WiFi internet access. I got back about 2pm (so about 32 or so hours since it last charged) and my battery was down to about 40 per cent. I usually charge my phone every night, but if I miss a night it always gets me through the next day without fail.

Personally I have the screen blanking out after 1 minute and I use the screen brightness at about half all the time. Internet and bluetooth are always on, but I only turn WiFi on when I use it.

What is your signal strength like? Mine is pretty good, but it's important to note that if your signal is marginal the device has to work a lot harder and that could attribute to the sort of battery drain you're experiencing.
